Your Favourite Historical Fiction Books?
I'm after some historical fiction books. As in modern books, set in the past. I don't want to read one that's a romance, but I also don't want one that's too literary or one that's badly written- like the ones my mother reads where the author churns out about three a year and they all seem to be very similar plots. It can be a male or female main character, any age character. I'm 23 if it helps. I don't mind what country or era its set in, but it does have to be reasonably historically accurate.
What do you like that fits this and why do you like them? Tell me a little about them?
Far and away my favorite historical fiction books are the "Flashman" series, written by the brilliant George McDonald Fraser. The first book was written in 1969 and the last in 2005.
What Mr Fraser did was take a character from a classic piece of serious english literature (Flashman from Tom Brown's school days) & asked himself what would happen to him later in life.
If you don't know Tom Brown's S/D, Flashman was the school bully who mercilessly tormented Tom Brown. Whereas that book is a bit grim, Fraser's books on Flashman are incedibly funny. They are meticulously researched (George McDonald Fraser is an excellent scholar) and basically put Flashman at the center of a whole lot of historic events of the 19th century. For example, early in the series he helps Bismarck unite Germany and later on fights with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn!! (and does lots of other things besides)
I like them for the humor & they really can get you interested in the historic events that they're set around. Flashman himself is pretty hilarious. He's an unreformed coward & womanizer but has the occasional bout of humanity which makes him kind of likeable.
